ABOUT BALI
With a reputation for being one of the most
beautiful and diverse tourist spots in Asia, Bali attracts nearly one million
visitors a year from all over the world.
Constantly rated as one of the best acclaimed
destinations by both Naste Condé and Travel and Leisure magazines, Bali is a
treasure trove of beauty, culture and shopping not to be missed!
Geographically Bali is located between the island
of Java and Lombok, and is one of the 18,000 islands that make up the
Indonesian archipelago. Bali is a small island and extends about 140 km from
east to west and 80 km from north to south. From east to west there is a strip
of volcanic mountains: the highest is Gunung Agung with its 3,142 m at its
highest point, its last eruption was in 1963.
Located just 8 degrees south of the equator,
Bali boasts a tropical climate with only two seasons (wet and dry) and has an
average annual temperature of around 28 degrees Celsius. The rich volcanic soil
and the monsoon season make this island extremely fertile. A series of crops
are grown throughout the year. The large regions to the south are home to rice
terraces, of which Bali is famous, and are among some of the most spectacular
in the world. In the hilly area and in the northern coastal regions, the main
crops are coffee, copra, spices, vegetables, rice and livestock.
The Balinese people have a strong spiritual root
and despite the large influx of tourists over the years, their culture is still
very much alive. The main religion is Agama Hindu Dharma, which arrived in Bali
with the spread of Hinduism through Sumatra and Java during the 11th century.
The original form of Hinduism comes from India. In Bali there is a union of
Hinduism, Buddhism, animism and ancient Javanese, with customs very different
from the traditional form of Hinduism practiced in India today. With the
arrival of Islam in neighboring Java during the 15th century a large number of
courtiers, artists, musicians and artisans fled to Bali, with the creation of
an art form.
The Balinese have traditionally used their talents
for religious purposes and most of their beautiful places to visit have been
inspired by the stories of the Ramayana and other Hindu epics.
The incredibly colorful places for cremation, and
the daily offers made to the gods, placed inside every shop and / or house are
made with an eye for detail and beauty.
Most of the population of Bali lives in communities
in small villages like large extended families.
The two most populated cities are the capital Denpasar
and Singaraja in the north. The main tourist city is Kuta, located near the
airport. This sleepy little village has become a major attraction during the
tourist boom of the 70s, for its famous white sand beach, surfing and
breathtaking sunsets.
Today Kuta is a busy and lively major tourist
destination, with hundreds of hotels, bars, restaurants and shops. Visitors
looking for some peace tend to stay in quieter areas like Sanur and Candi Dasa,
on the east coast, or Lovina in the north. Nusa Dua, another tourist resort
located in the southernmost part of the island, is aimed at higher tourism and
it is in this part of the island that many of the best 5-star hotels are found,
such as the Four Seasons and Aman Resorts.
Ubud, in the hilly region of Bali, is famous for
its artistic and cultural center of Bali which always attracts many tourists.
